Thunderstorms trigger flash floods

Office of Disaster Preparedness (ODPM) CEO Stephen Ramroop told Sunday Newsday he received reports of mostly street flooding with a lot of debris in Tragarete Road, South Quay, and around the Lapeyrouse Cemetery in Port-of-Spain, as well as in Arouca, Penal and Barrackpore.

He added that one house in Penal, and one in Arouca were flooded, but there was no significant damage.

A meteorological officer explained this was “nothing unusual” for the rainy season.

He said there was a convergence band west of the island. It moved north and east, and with heating over land, it produced a “flair up” of thunderstorms over most of Trinidad.

He added that south Trinidad got hit first at around 1.30 am, with Port-of-Spain experiencing the thunder storms from around 4.30 am.

The storms were expected to dissipate by yesterday evening.
