Garcia on right track
By so expressing this view, I can only hope that it would represent the view of the Government that the national anthem must always be played in its original format whenever and wherever, unlike a “proud” western country where almost every time its anthem is played you hear a different version, some versions very far removed from the original.
Nothing is wrong with the playing of our anthem by different instruments, whether the steel pan, piano, brass, strings or others, once the original melodies and harmonies are maintained and so also by the singer.
The minister has shown us that he is a true patriot and a man veined with cultural and artistic DNA and for this I thank him publicly for expressing his views of pride and respect for the national anthem in the forthright manner that he did. He is certainly on the right track, setting a desirable example and standard for our children.
It is unfortunate the other newspapers did not see it proper to publish my letter which would have expressed the message in a more quantifying way for all to appreciate its meaningful value.
Thank you Minister Garcia and thank you also Newsday.
