Clippers dedicate games to slain coach
Newsday was told by Kwesi Antoine, Caledonia Clippers manager, that while they are still reeling from their loss, Marquis would not want them to slow their momentum because of this tragedy.
“This is a big loss to us,” said Antoine, “I cried the whole of yesterday. Now that he is gone it feels as though we have lost a piece of our puzzle.
But knowing William the way that I do, he would not want us to falter because of this, but instead use it as motivation. That is why we are dedicating every game we play for the rest of the year to him.” According to reports, Marquis was at Tractor Hill, Morvant, at about 4 pm on Thursday, when he was approached by a man known to him. Just then, loud explosions were heard and, moments after, Marquis was found lying in a pool of blood on the side of the road.
Police and emergency services were alerted and Marquis was taken to the Port of Spain General Hospital, but he succumbed to his wounds while undergoing emergency surgery.
Antoine described Marquis as a friend, a brother and a champion.
“William was the kind of fella that would always work well in the community. He always pushed love and peace. To hear that he was killed has all of us wondering how this has happened and why?” Police have not yet ascertained a motive for the killing, however investigations are continuing.
The Caledonia Clippers are expected to play against the Police Basketball Club in Mayaro today.
