Getting the ODPM message across
I have the sense that State institutions are networked more easily into the ODPM programmes.
There are, however, areas in which ODPM work can progress and I wish to suggest in particular ways for the organisation to connect better with the regular public.
Neighbourhood flyers with detailed information have been circulated a couple of times, but these have to be filed if they are not thrown out; they relate with no practical experience; they are short-lived in memory; and they provide little scope for co-ordination within small groups.
Can the ODPM have nationwide open-house meetings and invite the public and organisations to attend? These would go a long way to bringing out the reality of the resources and designs to people and how to utilise them.
We would be able to meet ODPM representatives directly with our own questions and queries and get specific input from them. The ODPM would get a sense of the level of engagement.
Open-house sessions would be held on evenings and Sundays and parents would be able to attend with their children and plan their respective situations. Businesses and schools could attend in the daytime.
Displays could include video presentations, website highlights, with physical equipment and first aid demonstrations. Public speaking events could be organised with schools.
Designated shelters could be used if they are available, for example during the school holidays. Recommendations would take concrete forms.
Contacts would be made.
