Dillon a man of great technical abilities
There is now a lot of talk in the media about the Government’s first year in office.
Over the last weekend, I pulled out my shoe box of articles on the work of the current Minister of National Security, Edmund Dillon.
After perusing the articles it was clear to me that the minister, over the last year, has been focusing on bringing a more strategic approach to our country’s crime-fighting efforts.
I can describe his first year in office as “a year of strategy and planning”.
In its first year on the job, the Government has done work to rebuild and restore confidence in our country’s defence and law enforcement organisations. It has also taken the necessary steps to alleviate our problems with law and order by using a whole-of-government approach.
With this in mind, the minister has sought to integrate various units in the Ministry of National Security, the competencies and capabilities of the officers, to prepare for and respond to all threats and hazards that may impact the security of TT over the next five years and beyond.
Additionally, given the complexity of our national and security challenges, sustainable long-term solutions can only be found by strengthening our alliances with civil society including the Opposition, as seen recently, our hemispheric and international partners to protect the nation. Case in point is the upcoming Conference of Defence Ministers of the Americas.
This is a tremendous amount of work done by the minister. Dillon should be given credit for accomplishing so much in the area of strategy and other worthwhile initiatives.
I was once told that success is the result of foresight, which in turn depends on deep thinking and planning. From what I have seen over the last year, Dillon can certainly be described as a man of great tactical abilities.
I know a lot more work has to be done, but I urge the Government to stick with its plans as we cannot see results overnight.
