Relative stabs 63-year-old man

Kariya received five stitches to his side. He wept through the interview at Newsday’s south office.

Kariya said he was constructing a table at his home on Sunday when, at about 8 am, the relative entered the house and “start to break up the louvres.” He said, “He break about 12 louvre panes and without a word just take a piece of the louvre and run up to me and stab me in the side. It went in deep.” Kariya said he felt the blood running down his side and called the police. He was taken to the San Fernando General Hospital (SFGH) where he was treated and later discharged. Kariya said his relative is a chronic drug addict who is well known to police officers in the south western division.

He told Newsday the relative uses marijuana “like if is food.” “If you see the length and size of the joints and when he smokes, my life is in danger.

Right now, I am scared for my life because he is always threatening me,” the weeping man told Newsday.

“Look how he stab me. He wants me out of the house. It is really bad. The other day I was sitting on my bed and he opened a hose on me and soaked me down.”.

Kariya told Newsday he is a recipient of a disability grant and although he gives the relative money, he demands more.

“He wants me to give him all and telling me $100 is no money. He is wicked,” the man said bursting in tears.

Kariya, a grandfather of three said because of the relative’s violent behaviour, other close relatives had to flee the house.

He is now the only person living in his house. A former fisherman, Kariya told Newsday that because of his heart condition, he had to sell his boat to finance his heart surgery. He has not returned to sea because of his health challenges. He is an outpatient at the private nursing home Kariya said there are several reports against the relative at the La Brea Police Station.

“I am not well and can’t even sleep in my own house. I am begging the police to help me.” Police confirmed receiving a report about the stabbing incident. Investigations are continuing.
