‘He didn’t deserve this death’

Carlene Piango described Joseph as a jovial and friendly person who would do anything for his friends and family.

“He was the kind of person who would give his last for people he cared for,” said Piango.

“He would go out of his way to help people. This is such a shock for me. Up to Sunday afternoon we were talking and laughing like everything was normal. On Monday morning, one of our sons was at home when he got the call saying that he was killed.

This is very hard for his entire family because of the kind of person he was. He didn’t deserve to die like this.” According to reports, a man dressed in black and with a hood over his head, forced his way into Joseph’s Moya Trace, Carenage home, at about 3 a.m. on Monday. He approached Joseph, who was lying on a mattress, in the living room of his house, and stabbed him repeatedly.

Relatives heard Joseph’s screams and rushed to his aid but it was too late. Just as quickly as he entered, the killer slipped out of the house.

An autopsy done at the Forensics Science Centre on Monday revealed that Joseph had been stabbed at least 14 times. He died from massive haemorrhaging from stab wounds to his liver and lungs.

Newsday was told yesterday that Joseph was a father of four and a boat ride party promoter who owned two boats named “Top Cat” and “Super Cat”. His company, Island Lime Promotions, specialised in boat ride parties. Newsday understands that he had plans of obtaining and refurbishing a third boat. Piango told Newsday that despite their separation, she remained a close friend to Joseph and his family.

“We were together for a very long time since we were in school together,” she recalled. “He was always someone that would make you laugh. Even on your worst day, when you didn’t feel like laughing, he was the kind of person who would always be joking and jovial. He never complained of anyone threatening him, at least not to me. But he was the kind of person that got along with everyone.” Detectives still have not identified any in the murder of Joseph or his wife, Andrea Edwards.
