ILP: TT needs a revival of faith
While praising our system of government and the freedoms, protection and opportunities enjoyed by the citizens, she said a few serious issues must be confronted.
“The current state of the nation is not good. The condition of the Treasury is in question. Revenue streams have declined and are continuing to decline. The country’s credit facilities are over-burdened,” Ramjit said.
“Expenditure demands are at unsustainable levels. Unemployment is high and increasing. Development has slowed. Almost every sector is at a virtual standstill.
Productivity, innovation and entrepreneurship are low.” She was worried about racial tensions, spurred by dirty politics.
“Crime is escalating. The Government seems incapable of governing.
The Opposition is obsessed with making the country ungovernable in pursuit of power regardless of the price.” Ramjit lamented an absence of leadership at a time when citizens need hope and direction.
“This is compounded by the fact that the Office of the President is embroiled in scandal, which has undermined the foundation of confidence in the current officeholder.” Other institutions are deemed to be failing.
“Our country desperately needs a renewal of hope. We need to become inspired once again.” We must tap into our spirit of creativity and show a determination to collectively succeed, she said, observing, “We need a revival of faith that things can be better.” Ramjit said the nation must believe that good, honest people can lead without becoming sources of disappointment and shame.
“The renewal process can only begin by restoring the dignity of and confidence in our institutions and high offices. If those charged with this responsibility will not stand up and do their respective duty, then we the citizens must demand that they do that which is right or vacate office,” urged Ramjit. “Genuine, competent patriots must come forward and be the pillars of strength that our country needs.” She urged a revival of patriotism.
“But this can only be achieved if we go back to such basic things as reflecting on the words of our National Anthem and the values enshrined in the National Pledge, and to help our youths to connect with these noble ideals.”
