EKS Day celebrated by Special Olympics TT

The event, which is held worldwide to commemorate and give recognition to Eunice Kennedy Shriver, founder of the Special Olympics, is celebrated every year in September.

EKS Day brings together persons with and without disabilities to take part in various activities and is used as a forum to highlight the many characteristics of Kennedy Shriver __ inspiration, impact and an indomitable spirit.

The teams for the games were made up of athletes from the Memisa Centre, Immortelle, Lady Hochoy South and Penal, NCPD and the Goodwill Industries, along with volunteers and coaches, in keeping with the Special Olympics International theme #PlayUnified.

The sports and family day included numerous races including Pass the Ball, Hulahoop Burnout, Musical Hulahoops, the Chariot Race as well as 100 metre male and female races which were held in a collaborative spirit rather than a competitive one.

This year, for the first time at the event, free dental screening, dental education and giveaways were facilitated by the dental hygienist students and dental interns of the UWI Dental School.

The day concluded with a dance-off between coaches, athletes and volunteers.
