Kind-hearted Lillyann meets PM Rowley

Yesterday, at the Office of the Prime Minister, Williams was awarded with, among other things, a copy of the Prime Minister’s biography, From Mason Hall to White Hall.

About the book, Williams, who is a grocery attendant in San Fernando, said, “I am really excited to read it.” Apart from Rowley’s biography, Williams also received a certificate of appreciation along with a wreath of flowers which she said, she is particularly fond of. “I have never seen flowers like those before,” she said, and quipped, “They were the most beautiful flowers I’ve ever seen.” Williams shot to national fame within 24 hours of Kiram Ankar posting a picture on Facebook of her feeding Deoraj Singh, 66, while he awaited transportation outside JTA Supermarket, Cross Crossing, where Williams works.

The picture was shared thousands of times by citizens who posted glowing comments about her act of kindness. But for Williams, the act was nothing out of the ordinary for her.

In fact, she was not aware that a picture was taken of her until she walked into her workpalce the next day.

Williams told the Newsday yesterday, “They were showing me the picture. I went and stood up in the same spot, I watched the angle of the picture, and I really couldn’t remember seeing anybody standing there.” By then, she was already a national sensation for people on social media who welcomed the good news.

JTA promptly promoted Williams from grocery packer to Customer Service Initiator. She was later acknowledged by San Fernando Mayor Kazim Hosein and by Rowley.

And how did Williams respond to all of the public attention? “I just normal,” she said, “I am just very normal.” At the ceremony, Rowley said that seeing pictures of Williams helping the differently-abled man,”lifted my spirit”.

Rowley commended Williams saying, “You have shared love where there is so much hate; you have shared caring where there is so much indifference.” Williams’ most immediate goal is to write and pass CSE C Mathematics in January 2017, to aid in her application to join the Coast Guard. The former San Fernando West Secondary student is so focused on joining the Coast Guard, that she plans to start training her body with a strict regimen of running, weight-lifting, and swimming so as to make the transition into the service easier. She will also be pursuing an electrician course at NESC.
