Time to crack down on littering

However, the bottle only makes it to the of the middle of the road and the driver leaves it there. But that obviously does not bother him a bit. That is the type of attitude many of our citizens have adopted over the years.

Littering has become a way of life in TT and we are paying the price for this indirectly. We often talk about tourism having great potential as a revenue earner but people will not be motivated to come to a country that is littered with garbage at they turn.

Plastic bottles have become a menace in this country. They clog up our waterways resulting in flooding all over. You only have to note the hundreds of plastic bottles that are removed in a clean-up exercise to get an idea of the problem. These same bottles are also breeding grounds for mosquitoes, which are a serious threat to us all.

My suggestion is that the Government really begins to enforce the law when it comes to littering and people keeping their surroundings clean. Like with speeding on the roads and the crackdown with the speed guns, there must be a similar no-nonsense approach to littering.

We also need to put littering on the front burner in schools. Students must be shown the negative impact this type of behaviour is having on the country.

Whether we chose to accept it or not, littering affects us as citizens and our nation at large.
