Maxwell secures U-18 singles at Scotia t/tennis
Maxwell defeated his clubmate and the number one ranked Luc O`Young (Trimont College) in the final 6-11, 11-5, 11-6. Maxwell played spoiler yesterday for O` Young since he was looking for a hat-trick of titles as the previous day he captured the Under-18 Doubles with Jessie Dookie and lead his school to victory over Bishop` s High School in the Under-18 team final.
Both finalists recorded comfortable victories in their semi- final round with Maxwell overpowering Shaquille Mitchell (Bishop`s High School) 11-4, 11-6 and O`Young winning against Finn Boss (British Academy) 11-8, 11-7.
Maxwell, the Form Five student representing the “Green Machine”, said, “the tournament was good.
It was a bit challenging especially from the semi-final round. I thought the final against my club mate was evenly matched but I’m happy to come out victorious.” Speaking on what the victory can do for his school he noted, “it means a lot to represent your school so I hope this victory will raise awareness as they will know a decent player as at the school.” In the Under- 18 Girls, Jasher De Gannes (Bishop`s High School) got passed Nalini Boodoo (Naparima Girls) in the final 11-6, 11-5. In the semi-final round, De Gannes comfortably won against Malika Tripathi (Lakshmi Girls) 11-2, 11-2 but Boodoo was made to fight against Brittany Lee (Providence) but prevailed 8-11, 11-4, 11-4).
Shreya Maharaj (Naparima Girls) held her nerve to narrowly defeat Chelsea Fong (Providence Girls) 11-9, 11-9 to win the Under- 15 Girls Singles. In the equivalent category for the boys, Nikoli Alexis (St. Mary`s College) defeated Jessie Dookie (Trimont College) 11-9, 12-10.
The Scotiabank Table Tennis Championship heads to Tobago on November 5.
