Contractor compensates villagers
Former councillor for the area Raymond Cozier, told Newsday that approximately 30 children have resumed classes and 15 other residents were given washing machines, refrigerators, stoves, beds, mattresses, groceries and a few have been compensated for crops that became water- logged. On September 7, heavy rains caused the man-made pond to burst its banks, flow down the hill and into the Ortoire River which eventually overflowed into surrounding areas flooding several houses.
The contractor had been carrying out excavation works for construction of residential plots. Cozier said the contractor has said he was not responsible for the flooding and that the 400 feet by 1,000 feet pond was not on the property he is currently developing. Resident, Asha Lemessey, a mother of three children, said that she received two beds from the contractor, as well as books and school uniform, but she had lost shoes and slippers in the flood. “I have been asking for these items for my children since the floods,” a relieved Lemessey said.
