‘Driver’ in PriceSmart robbery charged

The 44-year-old man, who is believed to be the driver of the vehicle used to transport the armed robbers, was held at his Barataria home at about 5 pm on Wednesday during a police exercise.

This exercise was led by a team of the Port of Spain Criminal Intelligence Department (CID) and Northern Division including Snr Sup Radcliff Boxill, ASP Ajith Persad, Sgt Thomas, and Sgt Williams.

Two vehicles – including a Hyundai Elantra motor car and a Nissan Wingroad motor car – were seized at the suspect’s home.

Officers were expected to receive instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions over the weekend.

Four persons are already in court in relation to the robbery..

Shortly after the robbery on July 3, the store’s assistant manager Kerlon Smith of Eventide Court, Trincity was charged for the crime.

A second man, Clinton John of Prizgar Road in San Juan, was charged with being in possession of a cellphone stolen from one of the Pricesmart workers, but not for the robbery.

Kurt Cupid of Orchard Drive in Moka, Maraval, was also charged with robbery in relation to this offence.

All three matters are currently ongoing before the Arima Magistrates’ Court.

According to reports, around 11 pm on July 3, three armed men entered the store after it had closed that evening.

The men barged into a meeting of senior staff and forced them to lead them to the store’s safe.

The cash was placed in several bags and the men fled the scene without firing a gunshot.
