Horse racing crown champs at Jetsam Awards

It will be the annual Jetsam Awards ceremony presented by the Arima Race Club which takes place from 7 pm, where champions of horseracing for the 2016 season will be honoured.

From the look of things, the vote should go to Thisonesforron who produced five wins from his nine starts including the prestigious Gold Cup, and being three times runner-up.

His most serious rival will be the threeyear- old Academy Award, winner of four races including the blue riband Trinidad Derby.

Without doubt, the Merlin Samlalsingh- owned Academy Award must be the three-year-old champion.

Set Sail, Cactus Treasure and Battle Cry are the ones in the forefront for the champion two-year-old award.

But the honour should go to the speedy Dave Chadee filly Set Sail.

Swept Away is likely to sweep away the opposition as top fouryear- old.

Ronald “Tiger” Ali will receive his trophy as champion jockey, while veteran Glenn Mendez will collect the champion trainer award.

There will be a new category at the awareds ceremony, the Most Improved Horseman sponsored by the Racehorse Trainers Association, At tonight’s ceremony, Trade and Industry Minister Paula Gopee-Scoon is expected to outline the new Gaming and Betting Act.

And the evening will be completed with the witticism of Paul Keens Douglas who will bring back the old fables of horseracing of yesteryear.
