Charged for pregnant mother’s murder

Mitchell, a labourer employed with the San Fernando City Corporation was arrested and charged on July 8 following instructions from the DPP. The charge read to Mitchell alleged that on June 25, he murdered Ornella Phillip at her Thompson Street, Gasparillo home. A second charge read to Mitchell alleged that on the same day he had in his possession a firearm, not being the holder of a firearm users licence.

A third charge read to Mitchell alleged that he had in his possession ammunition not having a firearm users licence. The charges were laid indictably by police constable Chad Vialva of the Homicide Investigations Bureau (Region III) and the accused man was not called upon to enter pleas.

Mitchell was represented by attorney Charlene Kalloo. On June 25, Phillip who was a mother of an eight-year-old physically challenged child, was at home when she was shot dead. Her body was later discovered by a neighbour inside her house. Phillip was shot in the chest.The case was adjourned to August 7.
