Cops investigate fatal shooting of 20-year-old in La Brea

He has been identified as Jivon ‘Chucky’ Alexander of Sobo Village, La Brea. Police believe he was accidentally shot when he was being shown a gun by a 19-yearold friend. Alexander was shot in the chest. However the teen, who is in police custody, allegedly said in a statement that he and Alexander were walking along the Southern Main Road when he heard an explosion and saw his friend bleeding from a gunshot wound to his chest. When Sunday Newsday visited Alexander’s mother, Patricia Quashie, 50, at Pierre Road, La Brea, said she was still in shock. Quashie said she was at home when she told in a telephone conversation that her son was shot dead.

“I still can’t believe it,” she said.

“I am hearing all kinds of conflicting stories. I don’t know what exactly took place. I would really like to know what happened and how my son was killed.” Quashie said when she heard a gun was found near her son’s body, it raised suspicion because her son was not one to be involved in illegal activities.

“I am not covering up for him at all. Jivon is not that type of person. He don’t smoke, he don’t gamble, he is a hard-working, obedient boy. I can’t deal with this, another one of my children is dead within six years.” In 2011, Quashie’s daughter Alana, 20, died during childbirth at a hospital.

“That year I lost my daughter and my grandchild and now I have to deal with another pain. I just can’t cope. As a mother it really hurts me.” She said her son had a bright future ahead of him.

“He wanted to be an air guard and was working towards that.

He was just working as a PH driver for a while to save money then focus on his dream. Alexander lived with his father Jerry who was not at home when the incident occurred. An autopsy is expected to be performed tomorrow at the Forensic Science Centre.
