Slow progress in Ayers-Caesar cases

Yesterday, a handful of cases came up for mention before acting Chief Magistrate Maria Busby Earle Caddle and transcripts were provided to the accused.

Among those who appeared yesterday was Nigel ‘Dufu” Mayers and co-accused Nick Noreiga and Miguel Roberts.

Only one copy was provided to the three and Mayers’ attorney Wayne Sturge said each of the accused men is entitled to his own copy.

“We are not respon- sible for this situation.

It is the court’s responsibility,” Sturge said.

Mayers and the others will return to court on July 31.

Also appearing was Devon Caesar who complained that, “people are suffering in jail”, after he was told his transcripts were completed but had to be proof-read before he can receive his copy.

His case was also adjourned to July 31.

Ayers-Caesar, who presided in the Eighth Court in Port of Spain up until her elevation to the Supreme Court on April 12, resigned as a judge on April 27.

She has since filed legal action against the JLSC and the Attorney General challenging her ‘unlawful’ removal from office.
