KIMY
The gorgeous Kimy Stoute Robinson, 20, sent crowds in a frenzy when she bent backward so low holding a tray of glasses. Onlookers expressed amazement at what this young lady accomplished in her limbo stint. She proved that no one can do it quite like her. She was the one who took the title of National Limbo Queen at the 2003 Carnival competition. Since then she has been living her dream. A talented performer and a queen in her own right, Kimy is now travelling the world representing Trinidad and Tobago as the National Queen of Limbo. Apart from all this, Kimy is a teacher at Lenore’s School of Business Studies and she is also a member of the Trinidad All Stars Steel Orchestra. She has been able to accomplish all the goals she set as a child and more.
Speaking from her home at Upper St Francois Road, Belmont, she said that she learned long time ago that there is no place for losers in this world. “Everywhere you turn you see people excelling and I had a fire burning inside me to achieve the goals I set. I don’t care what it takes. If I set my mind to do something I am going after it like an arrow going towards a target,” she said smiling. She was quick to add that there is time to focus on the important things in life. “We must be able to get our priorities right and focus on our goals one after the other. This is the only way we can really achieve any measure of success,” she said. This energetic young woman is hungry for even greater success and she is able to achieve the goals with deep concentration and determination. The concentration and determination are exhibited in fine style during her limbo performance, when she bends as low as 8 inches from the ground with a tray of glasses. She has spent 15 years of her life on stage as a dancer and performer. She is a member of the popular Malik Folk Performers and it is through this group that she was able to attain the success she has gotten so far. It is therefore correct to say that she grew up on stage. She was in the popular play The Dragon Can’t Dance as well as many of the drama productions by Malik Folk Performers. She has appeared on almost all of the Best Village shows in Trinidad and Tobago during the past five years. She is a popular face among all the folks of Best Village.
It all started for Kimy while she was a student of the St Francois Girls School. Her fascination with the art of dance reached great heights when classes were given in school, and she became involved with Malik and learned all the other forms of dance, including African, Jazz, Samba, Cultural Folk and many others. In a quest to better her stage performance she took classes from Linda Pollard Lake, who taught her to understand the whole concept of dance. “I realised that the artiste use dance to transfer a message. Dance can be a part of either an unfolding story or it can be a combination of movements to depict the various forms of music. And music comes from the various cultures therefore dance really puts life into the culture of people,” she spoke with authority on the topic of dance. Both her parents, Leila Stoute and George ‘Carlos’ Robinson have been very supportive. “They see it as something positive and they give me the push I need to learn the arts,” she said. She considers her parents a blessing to her and as she says, without them, she would be nowhere.
She has the grace, the intelligence for national beauty competitions, but she thinks that it is not stimulating enough. “Just parading in a swim wear, evening gown and answering a few questions? No I would prefer the talent where the real test takes place.” She adores Hollywood actor, Denzil Washington. “He can just get into any role and do it so convincingly. It is amazing. I love to see him perform.” Apart from Denzil she admires Denise Plummer and Singing Sandra for their determination as performers. “Sandra is never ashamed to say that she came from the ghetto and that is a product of Best Village. She is proud of whom she is and I am inspired by her to do the same as her. Her next dream in life is to sing soca. She would like to join a band and try her hands at delivering a hot soca tune that will have people jumping and dancing. At the pace Kimy is moving, one will not be surprised if she accomplishes this goal in the near future.
