Schoolgirl, model and dancer who wants to be a lawyer
Beautiful and talented Sunita Colai, 18, of David Trace, St Helena Village, Piarco thrilled the audience on TTT’s Mastana Bahar with an ancient film dance recently. She captivated the audience when she appeared on stage in an exquisite silver and blue outfit with thousands of beads and diamante studs. The young lady glowed with confidence as she went through the routine of her dance number. She flashed her charming smile as she displayed the various techniques of the East Indian dance with her hands and feet. The producer of Mastana, Khayal Mohammed noted that she is a sign of promise and hope for the future of East Indian dancing in the country. Having finishing her routine, Sunita took a while to catch her breath. She immediately removed her gunguroos (dancing bells that are worn on the feet).
Her wide eyes mirrored her accomplishment as she settled down to drink some water. “I love to dance. It helps me to focus in life. I look forward to perfecting each step so that I could carry it before an audience. Dance is my first love because it helps me to express the feelings I have in my heart,” she revealed. Apart from dance Sunita is a Six Form student of St George’s College where she is now pursuing Modern Studies. It is her dream to become a lawyer. “I think this profession gives you the opportunity to prove that you are brilliant. I love to see women who are academically successful and still glamourous,” she said. “When a woman is educated, she is respected, she can be a model or any other thing she wants to be. If she is not educated then the world looks down on her. A perfect example is our own Miss Universe Wendy Fitzwilliam. She proved that she can become an attorney and she remains a hot number in any catwalk in the world. This is what I want to do,” she laughed out loudly.
Sunita is now a popular figure in TT, having made her mark on Mastana Bahar and also as a top model with the Vikash Academy of Fashions. She remains one of the top models at many of the Asian fashion shows in the country. Just like her dance routine she walks on stage with confidence and style. Her thick mass of black hair adds to her overall beauty. She loves to wear the mark in the centre of her forehead saying that it adds to the beauty of her eyes. “The Asian look is becoming more and more popular all over the world. And I love to get into the latest outfits that are coming out of India. It is like living a dream. Imagine you get to be a star for that one moment when you show off these outfits for the buying public,” she said. She noted that her parents, Calida and Balram Colai have been very supportive; without their guidance she would not have the ambition to achieve this much in life. As a teenager she is very concerned about the rapid increase of HIV infecting young people in the country. She feels that many young girls have the wrong approach to life and as a result of this they end up doing the wrong thing. “I believe as a young person you need someone to look out for you. It is a cold and cruel world out there with many bad influences.
Every where you go there is a young man waiting to get close to you. But if you do not value your own self then how can anyone respect you?”, she asked the question as though she was already a lawyer. She was quick to continue, “I really believe that the parents should get closer to their kids — especially the teenagers. Even if they object, parents should do everything in their power to stay close to them and monitor them at all times. Otherwise they will make a wrong choice and within a short space of time they become sexually active and this can lead to a life of misery,” she said. She noted that she doesn’t have time for a boyfriend because her studies are taking up a lot of her time and energy. “Boys can wait. I want to get my ‘A’ Levels completed then I would consider having a boyfriend. As for now, they do not exist,” she said it. She also praised her dance tutors Mahendra Rampersad and Ramnarine Bridgelalsingh for giving her all the opportunities to perform on stage. “I cannot say thank you enough to these two people. While they have been harsh at times, it really helped me to move forward as a performer in this country,” she said. Sunita is now preparing for the upcoming Miss Fem India TnT, where she will be participating. Today she will be appearing in concert at the Tunapuna Hindu School for the United Promotions Awards ceremony.
