Central businessman kidnapped...again
A 40-year-old businessman is the latest kidnap victim. For Kenneth Khanhai, this is the second time he has been kidnapped in two years. At press time, no ransom demands were made for the return of the St Helena village, Central Trinidad businessman. Khanhai was kidnaped outside his Lalsingh Street, St Helena Main Road home, around 10.15 pm on Saturday.
According to information, the father of two was about to alight from his jeep and open his gate when a white car with three armed masked men pulled up behind him. the men began charging towards him, a struggle ensued and several shots were fired while relatives and neighbours looked on. The businessman made a bold dash for freedom but was captured about 600 yards away on Ramal Street, and bundled into a waiting car. Khanhai, ironically, was kidnapped in March last year and released after an undisclosed ransom was paid. When Newsday visited his home, the traumatised family refused to share any information except to confirm that no demands were made and they were waiting and praying for his safe return.
They also refused to say what type of business he operates. Another relative said, “we paid out all the money during the last kidnapping, we have no more.” Relatives also refused to give their names or a photo of Khanhai because of fear. When contacted police told Newsday they are investigating the kidnapping which they believe to be drug-related. Snr Supt Gilbert Reyes and ASP Henry Millington of the Anti-Kidnapping squad are spearheading inquiries.
