Disc jockey beaten at Petit Valley party
A GONZALES disc jockey was yesterday warded at the Port-of-Spain General Ho-spital after he was allegedly beaten by officers attached to the West End Police Station following a party in Petit Valley. Kevin Agard, 23, DJ, of Blacket Lane, was reportedly playing music at a close friend’s house party at around 4am on Sunday morning when a number of small fights erupted. According to Agard, he along with the hosts of the event were attempting to quell the fights when a group of police officers in plain clothes arrived at the scene and ordered him into a waiting police vehicle. Agard then allegedly replied, “Let me know why I have to go. I know my rights.”
A police officer then reportedly informed Agard that he must go to the West End Police Station for questioning. According to Agard, after complying with the request of the officer, the van was stopped a few miles from where the party had taken place and the officer began brutally beating him punching him in the face and about the body. Agard added that the officer began to ridicule him about his “rights” and banged his head against the prison bars while he was in custody at the station. WPC Carrie Davidson, who according to Agard was not on the scene, laid two charges against him. The first, use of obscene language to the annoyance of persons and the other, obstruction of officers in the execution of their duties. After being granted bail in the sum of $2,000 Agard sought medical attention at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital where he was attended to by Dr William on Ward 15.
William informed Newsday that Agard’s nose was broken in two places and he suffered lacerations to the face along with minor bruises to the head. Agard’s clothing was covered in dried blood when Newsday visited him at the hospital. When attempts were made to verify Agard’s claims at the West End Police Station, officers on duty said that they saw no record of the incident in the station diary and could not give any information regarding the incident. Agard is to appear before a Port-of-Spain magistrate today.
