Four face rum charges
Police officers investigating the larceny of 53 cases of rum from the police canteen in Port-of-Spain, are expected to lay charges of larceny against two persons. One of the suspects is a police officer. Two other persons are expected to be charged with receiving stolen goods. Senior officers said yesterday that they have been able to trace to whom the rum was sold. Two bar owners, one who is the wife of a well known politician were questioned by investigators on Tuesday night and statements recorded.
Police have since recovered some of the stolen rum. The 53 cases of rum valued $32,000 was discovered missing on Monday. A civilian employee of the canteen reported to the police that he secured the canteen last Friday and returned on Monday to discover two padlocks cut away. He made a check and discovered the 53 cases of rum missing. The rum was supposed to be sold to police officers during the Christmas season. Senior officers expressed embarrassment over the larceny and revealed that the theft was an inside job.
