3 cops injured after bad drive

THREE Freeport policemen were injured after two police vehicles collided following a “bad drive” yesterday morning.

One of the policemen, Police Constable Marcano, is warded in a satisfactory condition at the Ward 14 of the Port-of-Spain General Hospital. The other two policemen, PCs Gomez and Persad were both treated and discharged. The incident occurred around 1.15 am, while the three policemen as well as two officers of the Freeport Highway Patrol were responding to a report in the Freeport district.

Reports said Marcano, Gomez and Persad, were travelling in a Cherokee jeep west along Mission Road, Freeport, when a car suddenly emerged from a track on the northern side of the road. Gomez brought the jeep to a halt to avoid hitting the car. PC Maharaj, who was following the jeep in a Highway Patrol vehicle along with PC Ramnarine, applied brakes but still crashed into the rear of the jeep and then slammed into a wire fence on the side of the road.

PC Marcano, who was seated in the back seat of the jeep, suffered whiplash, while Maharaj received a cut on his forehead and Ramnarine suffered bruises about his hands and legs. The three officers were conveyed to the Chaguanas Health Centre via an EHS ambulance where they were treated. Marcano was transferred to the hospital. Police are searching for the driver of the dark-coloured car who did not stop after giving the “bad drive” and causing the accident. Cpl Ford of the Freeport Police Station is continuing investigations.
