Jewelry heist delays Panorama departure

A jewelry heist in Scarborough early yesterday caused the MF Panorama to set sail at least 45 minutes later than scheduled. Newsday learnt that police had ordered that the vessel’s ramps be lowered to search for two men who had earlier robbed a jewelry store in Upper Scarborough of approximately $500,000 worth of gold and silver jewelry. According to police reports, at around 10:30 am, a half hour before the vessel’s scheduled departure, two unmasked men entered Vault Jewellers on Burnette Street, Scarborough, and announced a hold-up.

The two men tied up the 21-year-old proprietor, then the only person in the store, and proceeded to clear the showcase of its contents before escaping on foot. The police were quickly alerted and acting on the premise that the pair would try escaping aboard the vessel, requested a search. The MF Panorama left the Scarborough harbour shortly before noon after receiving the all clear from the investigating officers. Up to press time the men had not yet been caught, however Esp Dillon, Ag Insp Sharpe, Sgt Adams and Const Samuel, who are investigating the robbery, are optimistic that the case would be solved within the next 72 hours.
