2 killed in early morning Cocorite crash

TWO mechanics were killed in an accident in Cocorite yesterday morning. One of the victims died instantly while the other died a few hours later at Port-of-Spain General Hospital. A third is hospitalised following the accident on the Western Main Road. According to reports, following late night work at their Charles Street, Port-of-Spain garage, Roger Kennedy, 26, of Clover Gardens, Plaisance Road, Morvant, Charles Salvary, 43, of Charles Street, and Mervyn Roberts, 45, also of Charles Street, took a Cortina for a “spin.” At around 3.45 am, while speeding along the Western Main Road in the vicinity of Thomas Peake and Company Ltd, Kennedy, the driver of the car, lost control and crashed into a TSTT utility pole. He died instantly. Salvary and Roberts were rushed to the PoSGH where Salvary later succumbed to his injuries. Roberts was detained at Ward 13 up to press time.

When contacted, police confirmed the accident was due to sheer speed. Ag Cpl Robert is investigating. Meanwhile, truck driver Aziz Mohammed lost his life when the vehicle he was driving crashed into a shop near a bridge in St Helena. According to reports, at around 2.30 pm, Mohammed, of Marshall Trace, Cunupia, was driving south along the St Helena Main Road when, on crossing the main link bridge, he lost control of the truck and crashed into a nearby shop. Pedestrian Silvan Lyle, 60, of St Helena Village, who was standing nearby was also knocked down by the truck. The bleeding men were rushed to the Arima District Hospital where Mo-hammed died on arrival. Lyle was transferred to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital where he is warded in an unsatisfactory condition. Police sources told Newsday they believe Mohammed was drunk and speeding home when he lost control. Cpl Carrington is investigating. The latest death brings the road death figures to seven deaths in seven days from six fatal accidents.
