Justice Lucky returns as Law of Sea judge

Via a press-release, the minister noted that at a meeting of State Parties to the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Laws of the Sea, held at the United Nations Head-quarters in New York, Justice Lucky obtained 142 out of a possible 149 voting States.

“Justice Lucky is the second national of this country to be elected to the Tribunal and succeeded the late Lennox Ballah as a judge of this judicial organ,” the release stated. The release further noted that Ambassador Elsa Kelly of Argentina was the second judge to be elected from the region and in doing so she became the first woman to be elected to the Tribunal.

Five other Judges, from Asia, Africa, Eastern and Western Europe, were also elected.

The international Tri-bunal for the Law of the Sea, based in Hamburg, Germany, was established under the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea to settle disputes among Member States arising from the interpretation and application of the provisions of the convention.
