MAN MARRIED 12 TIMES
Marlon “Javier” Joseph, 36, of 10 Jackson Street, Curepe, was arrested on June 22 by Cpl Junior Bernard and PC Shaheed Khan at his workplace at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex (EWMSC), Mt Hope, where he is employed as a patient-care attendant.
Scores of curious onlookers gathered outside the court where police barriers were placed to contain the crowd who came to see Joseph. Joseph, dressed in his work clothes — blue scrubs, black pants and blue and black sneakers —kept his head down while the charges were read, even though Baboolal-Gafoor ordered him to “raise your head while I am speaking.”
Prosecutor Sgt Mark Joseph told the court the accused changed address every month which caused the magistrate to ask, “Are you a rolling stone?”
The prosecutor informed Baboolal-Gafoor that a woman on business at the Sangre Grande District Revenue Office, read the wedding banns posted by Joseph for his nuptials on July 16, his birthday. The court learned the woman was Joseph’s wife. She told Joseph’s fiancee about their marriage. The two women lodged a complaint at the Valencia Police Post. Joseph was charged with bigamy: the offence of marrying someone while married to another person. Neither woman was present in the court yesterday.
The prosecutor told Baboolal-Gafoor that Joseph was most recently married in 2008 and 2009, and ten times prior to those marriages, without divorcing any of the women. Baboolal-Gafoor asked Joseph if he had any children. He told her he had two children from his 12 “marriages”.
Joseph was denied bail and remanded to Golden Grove Prison to reappear in court on June 30.
