Guard held for stealing UWI chicken

A SECURITY guard attached to the University of the West Indies farm located at St Augustine will today appear before a Tunapuna court charged with larceny of a crate of chickens from the Government institution valued $2,200. According to reports, following the discovery of the crate with 55 chickens missing, UWI police officers went to the security officer’s Las Lomas home on Friday around 11.25 pm, where they found the chickens in a cage.

He was arrested and taken to St Joseph Police Station where he admitting stealing the chickens and using his car to transport them from UWI’s farm. The guard was placed on $20,000 bail by a Justice of Peace and will appear before a Tunapuna magistrate today. Investigations by Newsday revealed that livestock had been disappearing from the farm located on the UWI compound for years and was ending up as stock for sale on the open market. Sources also confirmed that two other persons were identified as part of the ring, but only one arrest has been made so far. Cpl Williams of the St Joseph police laid the charge against the guard.
