Suspect in murder, rapes and robberies held

A MAN wanted in connection with a murder, several rapes and at least 15 robberies was held by police yesterday in Rio Claro. The 21-year-old suspect of St Mary’s Village, Moruga, will be interrogated for the murder of Cedros fisherman Ramesh Lalchan, a senior police source revealed. On Tuesday, Verne Sambury and Nimrod Miguel appeared in the Princes Town Magistrates’ Court charged with Lalchan’s murder and were remanded into custody. Lalchan, of Fullerton Village, was found dead on Old Year’s Day, his body dumped on a dirt track in a canefield at Fairfield, Princes Town. He was shot twice in his head, an autopsy concluded.

A senior policeman said the 21-year-old man is a suspect in some 15 robberies committed in the South and Central districts. He is also expected to be further interrogated on several other crimes, including the rape and robbery of a Longdenville teacher and her daughter which occurred last week. Reports said the teacher, 49, and her 21-year-old daughter, were at home when three armed men stormed the premises. The intruders gang-raped the two women before robbing them of a cell phone and cash. They then escaped in the teacher’s car. Last Thursday, Princes Town Task Force police allegedly caught five men scrapping the teacher’s car in an isolated road in Tableland. Central Division and Princes Town Police are continuing investigations.
