INVASION
Invazion is one of the most happening acts in the Carnival and in the Caribbean. The band’s frontline act include the 2002 and 2003 Road March winners — Naya George and Faye-Ann Lyons as well as reigning Soca Monarch, Iwer George. The band is led by Iwer and managed by Naya, Iwer’s younger brother. For Carnival 2002 Invazion has been booked nightly and are kept busy with studio recordings for radio and television commercials. Faye-Ann is again a contender in the road march race with her “Freedom” and “Loose yuh Way”. Faye-Ann and Naya stopped off at Gulf City in La Romaine, on their way to Port-of-Spain from their Point Fortin home, to talk to People earlier this week
Faye-Ann looked outstanding in a simple jeans and T- Shirt. As she stepped out of her winning car —a black and silver Focus, she removed her sun glasses to wipe away the sweat caused by the midday heat. “Oh Gawd it good to be back home and enjoying the best of Carnival,” was her opening remark in the husky but smooth voice. Since winning the Road March title, Faye-Ann and Invazion together with Iwer have performed in New York, Florida, Canada and the UK where the audiences went wild over the soca music. “I could not believe that the people would carry on this way. It is just like the Trinbagonians. They lose themselves in the music and this is just great. Invazion has accomplished their goal of reaching the people and moving them with the soca music. Which is indigenous to TT,” she said. Iwer, the Soca Monarch of 2002 and 2003 and Road March King of 2000, is creating a frenzy again this year with his “Turn Around” which is almost like a soca anthem.
He is one of the few performers who composes all his songs. Despite the many negatives written about him, he continues to prove himself as a favourite especially with the party crowd. What inspires Iwer to come up with the slang that has the crowds jumping and waving? “You have to be in the business. You have to know your people and if you think about it long and hard enough, is simple but effective words are right there at the tip of your tongue,” he said. The soca king noted that he does not like to touch on the troubled topics but instead he chooses to select the words that will make people forget the pain and problems and let loose for that moment. Iwer and Invazion will remain on the go as right after Carnival as on February 28 the band will perform in Miami, Grenada on March 6. On March 13 they go Brooklyn and March 20 to Queens for several soca shows there.
