Drive carefully and celebrate safely
If we are to be safe on the nation’s roads and around fireworks at this time of year.
Here are some useful tips:
1. The designated driver needs to avoid alcohol altogether.
While the drink drive limit is 35mg of alcohol in 100 ml of breath, it is not possible for drivers to estimate whether they are above or below this limit by counting drinks because everybody absorbs alcohol at a different rate.
2. Keep clear of others on the road that may have been drinking.
3. Drivers should make sure they are ready for driving wet conditions.
4. Don’t forget to have fun!
While being the designated driver is not everyone’s favourite occupation and driving safely is a serious responsibility, it is possible to stay sober and have fun at the same time!
Nominating a designated driver or arranging for alternative transport such as a taxi in advance of the New Year celebrations is the responsible thing to do. Any amount of alcohol affects your ability to drive and there is no foolproof way of drinking and staying under the limit so we recommend that people avoid it completely if they are intending to drive. If you do arrange a designated driver this year remember to thank them.
Safety around fireworks:
Ensure your use of fireworks is legal. Fireworks can cause serious burn injuries. They burn at about 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit and are typically viewed by parents as relatively harmless fireworks for children, but they aren’t.
The following are safety tips when handling fireworks:
1. The best way to enjoy fireworks is to visit public fireworks displays hosted by professionals who know how to safely handle fireworks.
2. Closely supervise children around fireworks at all times.
3. Do not give children sparklers or allow them to pick up fireworks or other novelty items.
4. If you plan to use fireworks, make sure they are legal in your area.
5.Never light fireworks indoors or near dry grass.
6. Always have a bucket of water and/or a fire extinguisher nearby. Know how to operate the fire extinguisher properly.
7. Do not wear loose clothing while using fireworks.
8. Stand several feet away from lit fireworks. If a device does not go off, do not stand over it to investigate it. Put it out with water and dispose it.
