Fazeer the smooth operator
PUT ON your radio any day of the week between 6 to 9 am on 103 FM and you’ll experience the talent of the dynamic and energetic announcer, Fazeer Rojan. The handsome Fazeer is obviously enjoying every second of his time in the prime time slot on the popular East Indian frequency. He is also in demand as a master of ceremony and did a fantastic job when he hosted the Valentine’s Day show at the Anchorage, Chaguaramas, adding a refreshing touch to the event. Fazeer, 21, aims to stay on top of his beat and whenever he is in the role of master of ceremonies, he could often be found backstage jotting down lines to enhance his next presentation and capture the attention of his audience.
“One can never be too prepared for the stage. Even a simple task of introducing an item seems difficult when the audience is this large, with people paying ‘X’ amount of dollars to enter. I have to find the right words to put them in the mood to welcome the various singers and as you can see I am getting through nicely,” he said, raising his eyebrows and smiling. Beneath the “smooth” appearance Fazeer simply cannot settle down to being just an announcer. He wants more out of life. At his Gasparillo home, a serious-faced Fazeer questioned why People was interested in him. “Why me?” Responding to the reply that he is a public person, addressing a large percentage of the population via radio on a daily basis and that the reading audience would perhaps, like to know more about him, he said: “Well, I don’t mind giving my story. Maybe I would be able to charm the perfect woman out there.” This is typical him. Quick to lighten up the atmosphere, interjecting a joke here and there.
Seriously, Fazeer reveals he’s a bookworm and spends a lot of time researching the works of great world leaders, politicians, actors, performers and others. “I don’t mind getting into politics. I like the subject because I believe that one can really make a massive contribution to society as a politician. So I would definitely get into politics soon,” he revealed. He believes that life is about much more than just earning a living and producing a family. “We all want change. But we are not prepared to work for change. We want it now on a silver platter and this is because we have the ability to dream. So we dream a lot about success and we tend to leave there as a dream,” he said gesturing with his hands. About the present political climate in TT, he noted that there are few politicians who are willing to bring about change in TT. “They do everything in their power to win votes and when they get into a Parliament, they are too busy being celebrities that they forget their real purpose. I am yet to see a politician who would really represent people and go any length to bring about the change in society,” he said.
Fazeer is the only child of Fyzool and Haniffa Rojan. He is a past pupil of the Gasparillo Hindu School and San Fernando Government Secondary. He studied broadcasting with Holly Thomas in Wookbrook. He is pursuing a diploma in administrative management at UWI and hopes to do a degree in economics later on. Responding to an advertisement for announcers, Fazeer forwarded a demo tape to 103 FM and was chosen from hundreds of tapes that came to the station. He was an instant hit. His ability to think quickly and maintain a smooth flow of music and words gave Fazeer the edge. For him the East Indian frequencies are really helping the youths to re-instill the values that the past generations held close to their hearts.
“The radio station offers more than just music to entertain the audience. It can reach out to the people in their homes and cars and the workplace with valuable words of inspirations and words of comforts for those who are experiencing pain in some way or another. It also helps to identify with the culture of a people who were responsible for clearing the path for the younger folks through culture,” he said. Well what about love? Fazeer had his fair share of heartbreaks and he has learned a lot out of his experiences in life. “Very often people tend to fall in love with an image that they create in their minds. And very often this special someone does not live up to that image and there are problems,” he explains. He loves a woman who is honest and dedicated in life.
