Retired cop killed on south road

A RETIRED police officer is the nation’s latest road fatality after he was knocked down and killed while attempting to cross a busy main road in Pleasantville. Cornelius Joachim, 65, who served 30 years in the Police Service, was killed a stone’s throw away from his Butterfly Avenue, Pleasantville, home. The driver of a green Nissan B14 Sentra, which struck the elderly man, went to the Mon Repos Police Station and reported the accident. When Joachim ran across the San Fernando Bypass, in the vicinity of the Pleasantville Interchange, one car swerved to avoid hitting him but the green Sentra collided with him.

With tears in her eyes, the dead man’s wife, June, said Joachim left home early yesterday morning saying he was going out to come back. She said after her husband’s retirement, he spent most of his time in the garden and was also a member of the Juniors Cricket Club. An autopsy is expected to be performed today at the mortuary of the San Fernando General Hospital. Cpl Anderson Cuffie of the Mon Repos Police Station is continuing investigations.
