Inspiring cats

Centuries ago, an old Irish monk wrote a poem about the little white cat called Pangur Ban, who shared his cell. Closer to our own time, the poet T S Elliot wrote “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats” and there we met Skimbleshanks, the Railway Cat who had everyone searching for him, “saying, Skimble, where is Skimble, for unless he’s very nimble, then the Night Mail just can’t go.” In the 1980s Andrew Lloyd Webber based his musical, “Cats”, on these poems and it ran for years.

William Shakespeare called the domestic feline, “the harmless, necessary cat”, which is not exactly an enthusiastic description but in his time cats were not the popular pets they have since become. However, by the eighteenth century their lot had improved and Dr Samuel Johnson’s cat, Hodge, was described by his owner as, “a very fine cat, a very fine cat, indeed.”

Cats have shared our homes and our lives for thousands of years and, no doubt, most of them have been “very fine cats indeed”.

Maybe it is time you adopt a cat. You need a cat to come home to, a cat who will be a quiet companion and dedicated supervisor of your every move. You need a cat who will sleep peacefully on a cushion, your stomach, the top of the wardrobe and the newspaper you want to read.
