SBA plans peaceful crime protest
Just like other business districts and organisations in the country, the San Fernando Business Association (SBA) has planned a peaceful demonstration in the wake of the spate of crimes. A few months ago, Princes Town businessmen voiced their concern over the crime situation by closing businesses for certain hours during the day. Yesterday, members of the Penal/Debe Chamber also closed their businesses between 2 pm and 5 pm, voicing their concern over the impact of the upsurge of criminal activities in the country.
President of the SBA, Daphne Bartlett, said between the hours of 10 am and 1 pm on Wednesday businesses along Cipero Street and environs would engage in a “peaceful demonstration.” She said others were invited to join. Bartlett said, “We think it is high time we take back our country from the criminals.” She called on Government to respond quickly to the crisis in crime by “efficient, sustainable law enforcement and zero tolerance in lawlessness.” She also called on Government to inject more funds into the Judiciary and Police Service.
