Abraham joins TT team for regional championship

The accomplished endurance cyclist and team captain will join the likes of Collin Wilson, Joshua Alexander, Gevan Samuel and manager/ coach Joseph Charles Walcott, all of whom arrived in the Dutch island yesterday.

Abraham and his team are expected to face stiff opposition from other regional contenders since the Caribbean Associations of National Olympic Committees (CANOC) have made ten spots available in the male road races, for automatic qualification to the 2014 CAC Games in Vera Cruz, Mexico.

The local squadron will vie for CAC places and top honours among the likes of Pan American Games champion Marc de Maar (Curacao); Efren Otega (Puerto Rico); Jyme Bridges and Robert Marsh (Antigua & Barbuda); 2012 Tobago Classic winner Darren Matthews (Barbados); Godfrey Pollydore (Guyana); Cedric Eustache (Martinique) and Cliff Apinsa (French Guiana), and a host of other top new names that have surfaced this year.

Today the championships will officially commence with an opening ceremony and display of teams, followed by a technical meeting whilst tomorrow features the start of the male and female Individual Time Trial events. Guadeloupe’s Carene Boris is the defending male champion and will be attempting to retain his crown. On Sunday, the regional meet climaxes with the male and female road race. TT will ride for glory in the men’s 80-mile road race, and again try their hands at dethroning 2012 winner, Boris.

Altogether, 21 Caribbean countries have confirmed participation this year.
