Family escapes death

A MORVANT family awoke early yesterday to find a runaway car inside their drawing room and the driver of the car pinned in the front seat with a dazed look on his face. He kept repeating, “Oh God brother, ah sorry.” Danny Williams, 47, a Trinidad Hilton employee, told Newsday that he was at home with his wife Terriann Williams and their 21-year-old son when around 1 am they were awakened by a crashing sound. Williams told Newsday that he made a check and looked on in amazement as a car remained parked between his drawing room and kitchen.

He pointed out that all his appliances, the stove, and other household items were destroyed by the crashed car. “All I did was try to keep my cool and telephone the police and fire services,” said a frustrated Williams. He said that the driver of the runaway car who suffered slight injures told police officers that he was driving along Lady Young Road, when he was blinded by bright lights from another vehicle, causing him to run more than 100 feet off the roadway. He crashed into the house owned by Williams which is located 100 feet below the northern side from the white line off the Lady Young Road. The driver of the car, identified as Jeffrey Phillip of Morvant, was taken to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital where he was treated. He expressed regret over the incident and was thankful to be alive.

He said if he had not been wearing his seatbelt he would have been killed. He promised to compensate the distressed family. Up until midday yesterday, the crashed car remained in the living room of the home of the Williams family. Williams told Newsday that apart from losing all household items, the continuous rainfall also caused part of the house to flood and he was eagerly awaiting the removal of the car so he can start effecting repairs. He was assured by the owner of the runaway car that the vehicle would be removed yesterday. Williams said that he is eagerly awaiting compensation for his losses and is calling on the police to speed up their investigations.
