TT cycle team 18th at W/Cup
Contesting the Team Sprint event, the DPS trio of Quincy Alexander, Jude Codrington and Justin Roberts clocked a personal best time of 44.346 seconds. However it was still not fast enough to secure a place among the top four finishers as TT’s time was ranked at 18th overall.
But, the sleek 250m Aguascalientes track soon came alight when the Great Britain trio of 2012 Olympic Sprint gold medallist Jason Kenny, Philip Hindes and Kian Emadi-Coffin smashed the world record in a blistering 42.339s.
This mesmerising performance saw them eclipse the previous Team Sprint record of 42.6s, which was set by the English squad at last year’s Olympic Games.
And in a bold reply to Great Britain’s record breaking ride, the menacing German team of Robert Forstemann, Rene Enders and Joachim Eilers set the Mexican circuit afire when they shattered the freshly set record in scorching 41.871s.
Both European nations have now set the stage for a mouth-watering final between the two, while Australia (Shane Perkins, Nathan Hart, Matthew Glaetzer) and the Netherlands (Jeffrey Hoogland, Hugo Haak, Matthijs) vie for the bronze medal.
Meanwhile up to press time last night, national endurance cyclist Varun Maharajh was gearing up for his opening three-legs of the Men’s Omnium event.
Even though his results were not yet available for today’s publishing, Maharajh was scheduled to face the starter in the Flying Lap, Points Race and Elimination Race last night.
Today, Olympian Njisane Phillip will also line up in the opening stages of the Sprints.
He is expected to face stiff opposition since Kenny and Perkins (Olympic Sprint gold and bronze medallists) and Forstemann will be some of the more notable names vying for honours in this division.
Phillip will also attempt the Keirin tomorrow while Maharajh continues the second half of the Omnium.
The two-man national team of Phillip and Maharajh is being managed by Trinidad and Tobago Cycling Federation official Gary Acosta while the DPS contingent is being coached by Des Dickie and managed by Robert Farrier.
