Atlantic LNG probes explosion
INTERNAL investigations are continuing into the explosion of a turbine on the Atlantic LNG which forced scores of workers to scamper to safety. Attempts to reach officials have been unsuccessful and at the same time many workers have been reportedly reluctant to speak about the incident.
However on Saturday, Ernest Thompson who led the striking ALNG workers some two months ago said, “It (the explosion) shook the entire place.” Since the explosion occurred on the Train III section around 3.15 pm on Saturday, operations came to a halt. At the time between 150 and 200 workers were on the compound. No injuries were reported.
According to reports, company officials have attempted dealing with the situation without outside help. Reports have indicated neither the police nor the fire services were called in after the explosion. Checks with the Point Fortin Police and Fire stations confirmed neither were called in. The company’s maintenance team went on the compound after the explosion. Ag Sgt Pardasie and Cpl Straker of the Point Fortin Police Station visited the scene in the aftermath of the explosion which was reportedly heard from as far as a three mile radius from the compound.
