Cop: Witness’ statements not consistent
After further cross-examination of police investigator Cpl Ruben Alleyne by defence attorney Ian Brooks, the State yesterday closed its case in the murder trial in which Wendell “Bullen” Dubarry is accused of shooting Mario Cobus to death on July 27, 2001. Under cross-examination yesterday, investigating officer Cpl Alleyne said he noticed inconsistencies in the statements given by the State’s main witness, Anastasia Gillford, with respect to the identity of the accused.
According to Alleyne, after comparing the diary entry of the statement given by the lone witness to the shooting, to the second statement given by the witness, he said one statement gave the indication that the witness did not know who the shooter was, while another said she did. Alleyne said in all his dealings with the State witness, Gillford maintained that she did not see the alleged shooter, however Alleyne said when he saw the second statement given by the witness some time later, this statement stated that Gillford had come face to face with the gunman. Defence attorney Ian Brooks then put it to Alleyne that this was not the case. When hearing resumes today, attorneys for both the State and the defence will begin making submissions to the jury.
