Giuseppi to miss Labour Day in Fyzabad
President of the National Trade Union Centre (NATUC), Robert Giuseppi, will be absent from today’s Labour Day celebrations in Fyzabad. Giuseppi and NATUC’s general secretary Vincent Cabrera are in Geneva to attend the 94th general session of the of the International Labour Organisation (ILO). Cabrera was due back home yesterday. Giuseppi, who was carded to be the main speaker when members of NATUC’s units assemble at Avocat Junction in Fyzabad, will be replaced by TT-based ILO workers’ specialist, Paula Robinson. NATUC has chosen as its theme: “Decent work for all, an end to violence and crime, and action on the HIV/AIDS pandemic.”
After greetings/statements by NATUC’s first deputy president, Owen Hinds, the workers will march through the streets of Fyzabad in a show of unity and solidarity. Hinds told a press conference yesterday that various speakers will be dealing with a variety of subjects, including a call for the introduction of legislation to stop an employer from functioning in the event of a lockout. Claiming that it takes much too long for unions to get recognition because of the way the Recognition Registration and Certification Board (RRCB) operates, Hinds said speakers will also be dealing with this subject. A trophy will be at stake for the best NATUC unit on show.
