Wreckers do busy business on City Day

LEGALLY parked motorists operating in the capital yesterday fell prey to police wreckers when their vehicles were towed away to accommodate a military parade put on by the Port-of-Spain City Corporation as part of “City Day.” Streets designated for parking on Saturdays were not open for such because of “City Day.” This was compounded by insufficient temporary no parking signs to guide motorists on the parking changes for the occasion. In addition, permanent street signs that read “Parking Allowed All Day Saturday,” were not covered.

In a release the Downtown Owners and Merchants Association (DOMA) apologised to shoppers and motorists for the unfortunate circumstances that occurred. The association said although it knew yesterday was “City Day,” it was not advised of any prohibitions of parking and also denied having prior knowledge of wreckers being deployed. DOMA branded the authorities as “inconsiderate,” to motorists and shoppers alike in the city who were both inconvenienced and faced with unnecessary expense without any advanced notice of the special arrangements.
