Point Chamber says Bills defeat a tragedy
THE Point Fortin Chamber of Industry and Commerce said there was “no excuse” for Government and Opposition not reaching a compromise on the Police Reform Bills and it was a great tragedy that Parliament could not pass the Bills last week. In a statement, the Chamber expressed “profound disappointment with the failure of our Parliament to pass the necessary Bill amending the Police Service”.
“Given the state of siege under which the criminals have placed the many innocent and law-abiding citizens of our beloved country, no excuse is acceptable for not reaching a compromise among our politicians in order to take decisive action to empower our Police Service and supporting agencies to wipe out the scourge of crime now crippling our social economic development,” the Chamber said. Noting that the Bills cannot be re-tabled in Parliament under six months, the Chamber urged Government “to take immediate and unilateral steps to execute their Plan B to say to the criminals, ‘we have had enough’”.
The Chamber said in the meantime, it will meet with other business organisations throughout the nation to develop a series of amendments to the legislation, and these amendments will be jointly offered to the Government and Opposition for “inclusion in the new crime legislation”. “We are signaling to the politicians that we have reached the point where we are demanding appropriate and timely action from those who wish to continue to seek our support to represent our interests at the highest level,” the Chamber said.
