3 charged with having 319 rounds of ammo
A 64-YEAR-OLD grandfather, his wife and their granddaughter, will this morning appear before a Couva magistrate to answer charges of possession of 319 rounds of ammunition. The ammunitsion was allegedly discovered by police at the family’s home yesterday morning in Freeport. The charges against the trio resulted from a police raid on a house at Tait Madhoo Trace, around midnight, Saturday by members of the Couva CID. The house was searched by Sgt Lummy, PCs Figaro, Brandon John, Bissoon and De Verteuil who executed a search warrant around 12.10 am.
The charges alleged that the policemen discovered a crocus bag under a bed in one of the family’s bedrooms. The bag contained the ammunition and when counted, amounted to 319 rounds. The grandfather, his wife who is 59 and their granddaughter, were arrested and taken to the Couva Police Station. The ammunition was listed as been double-barrel shotgun bullets. The charges was laid by PC Brandon. This type of ammunition, police said, is mostly used by hunters who must not, according to Firearms Act, keep in their possession more than 25 rounds. The police exercise also resulted in the arrest of a man in the Couva district with a .38 revolver and two kilos of marijuana.
