Limited State of Emergency
THE CHAMBER of Commerce yesterday acknowledged that there was a breakdown in law and order and said it will support a limited State of Emergency. In a statement yesterday, Chamber president Christian Mouttet said, “the escalating violent criminal activities in the country clearly demonstrate that there is a complete breakdown in law and order, and that urgent action is needed to address the rapidly deteriorating crime situation.”
As such, he said while “the Chamber does not advocate employing any action which will hinder economic activity or deter investors, the situation has reached such catastrophic proportions that the Chamber will support a limited State of Emergency, if that is the action required to remove guns from the hands of criminals, and arrest the upsurge in brutal and vicious crimes.” Mouttet added that the Chamber cannot stress strongly enough “how important it is for immediate and drastic action to be taken as it is clear that criminals have no fear or respect for the protective services, and they have no value whatsoever for human life.”
