Jowelle more than transsexual

It was with no great surprise I read the comments of the religious people (I take issue with calling said people leaders) who expressed opinions.

Their comments led me to question whether they truly represent the voice of their respective communities and if so whether TT really cares about honest, hard- working, intelligent people as leaders in our country.

The objective citizen must look at the facts and the contributions those who choose to sacrifice for the betterment of our country can provide.

Jowelle is more than a transsexual. She is a successful career woman, she runs a rape crisis centre, a shelter for animals, and these are only the attributes we are aware of.

Pastor Winston Cuffie stated that “being transgender will inevitably affect her policies,” yet in every speech Jowelle has given thus far, she has spoken mainly about the development of San Fernando. She continues to speak about what she intends to do and what she is prepared to do for the betterment of San Fernando. She has maintained her integrity, staying clear of traditional political bashing and small talk.

TT has a long way to go and the best place to start is to understand the difference between transsexual and transgender.

I urge my fellow Trinidadians/Tobagonians to be independent thinkers and not let social, cultural and religious bias affect our judgement.

I commend Jowelle for being who she is and choosing to sacrifice for her country. Good luck Jowelle.
