Three killed in Point crash

THREE females — a 15-year-old girl, a 66-year-old woman and another unidentified woman — were killed yesterday afternoon when the “Private-Hire” taxi they were travelling in crashed into a lampost in Pt Fortin. The victims who have been identified so far are Marlene Johnson, 15, of La Brea and Julie Sylvester, 66, of Vance River, Guapo. Police are now seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the third woman, described as being of African descent and in her 50s. Up to late last night, Donnaron Rodriguez the driver of the car, remained warded in critical condition at San Fernando General Hospital. Doctors told police that Rodriguez’s condition was bad, and his chances of survival were grim. Another woman, Deborah Vespry, 28, of Cochrane Village in Guapo, escaped with minor injuries.

Ray Sylvester, the distraught son of Julie Sylvester, told Newsday through tears that his mother was on her way home after visiting relatives where she dropped off money to be sent to Grenada for relatives living in the hurricane-ravaged island. According to police reports, around 4.30 pm, the white Nissan B13 Sentra was proceeding south along the Southern Main Road. On reaching near the Dunlop Round-about, a truck, which was proceeding in the opposite direction, came close to the car, causing the driver to pull to avoid a collision, sending the car into the lampost. The teenager and elderly woman were both thrown through the windscreen on impact. The elderly woman died on the scene while the teenager died at hospital. Sgt Woods visited the scene and the DMO ordered the bodies to be removed to the San Fernando Mortuary where autopsies are expected to be carried out tomorrow. Investi-gations are continuing.
