Rene is top young woman
Renee Alfred, 18, of Scarborough, Tobago was selected ‘Young Woman Of The Year’ 2004 at the second annual awards of the Network of Non Governmental Organisa-tions of Trinidad and Tobago for the Advance-ment of Women, held at the Hilton on Sunday evening. Renee who plans on pursuing a career in medicine, as her older sister Roslyn, is currently enrolled in the Pre-Health programme at the School of Medicine, St Augustine. On Sunday evening, she was the winner from among 12 finalists, all between the ages of 18 and 30 who competed in the categories of Business Enterprise, Cultu-ral Development, Social Development and Sport. Renee also won the award for Cultural Development. Cigi George of Guapo, an employee of Petrotrin’s Trinmar Operations and a part-time maths teacher won for Social Development and Tiana Sosa-Saney a female boxer with seven wins and no losses, was tops in Sport.
Renee obtained 11 CXC and four A-Level passes. In addition to her academic gifts, Renee is a veteran of numerous talent competitions as a singer and dancer. She has entered are 12 and Under in 1995, Trinidad and Tobago Music Festival where she placed second in the Gospel Solo category; Tobago Carnival Queen show which she won in 2002; calypso queen competition in Tobago where she was also first in 2002; Tobago Calypso Monarch competition placing second in 2002; Young Kings finals in Tobago where she won in 2003 and Tobago Heritage Festival, winning in the folk category 2003. Rene has also toured with Rhythmic Vibrations Performing Company as lead dancer, vocalist and dramatist. Commenting on her most recent success, Renee stated after the show, “I’m happy to make Tobago, my parents and my nominee, Arlene Daniel proud.”
