‘Altar Boyz’ debuts tonight

What has been described as, “a foot-stomping, rafter-raising, musical comedy about a fictitious, now famous band on the last night of their international “Epiphany Tour 2016” world music tour.

Matthew (The Leader), Mark (The Sensitive One), Luke (The Bad Boy), Juan (The Latin Lover) and Abraham (The Fish Out Of Water) also known as ‘The Boyz’ are five all-singing, all-dancing heartthrobs.” According to a release issued on the musical, it says, “Altar Boyz is a satirical comedy about a heavenly band performing the final show on its world tour.

The musical is full of light-hearted fun and tonguein- cheek humour, with an unexpected mix of comical songs convincing enough to be played on MTV, BET or VH1, full of irrepressible laughs.

“The off-Broadway musical premiered in 2005 with music and lyrics by Gary Adler and Michael Patrick Walker and book by Kevin Del Aguila (based on an idea by Marc J Kessler and Ken Davenport).

Local production company JCS Entertainment Ltd. has been awarded the rights to bring ‘Altar Boyz’ to the Trinidad and Tobago stage by R and H Theatricals.

JCS also welcomes the Maritime Financial Group as its first ever Royal Circle Sponsor.” The local version of the musical is directed by Raymond Choo Kong and choreographed by Abeo Jackson and will feature a “live six-piece band on stage as a part of the action, led by musical director Keon Jeffery and choral director Lorraine Granderson.” The 90-minute performance will feature over 18 musical numbers across multiple genres including hip hop, rock, pop ballads, Broadway and Latin Music.

The musical’s signature hits such as “Rhythm In Me,” “The Calling,” and “I Believe,” will be performed.

The musical features the ‘Boyz’ who question their loyalty to each other and ask whether or not faith is really holding them together.

They finally deliver a message of unity, that “there is no star as bright as its constellation, no harmony in a single voice,” the release said.

The musical runs from April 8 to 10 with special school shows scheduled for April 11 to 14 and again from April 15 - 17 to general audiences.
